HCM City foreign-currency loans drop

Total outstanding loans of credit institutions in HCM City increased by 6.5 per cent in the first eight months of the year. Of the total amount, outstanding loans in Vietnamese dong rose by 7.94 per cent, but outstanding loans in foreign currency fell by 1.23 per cent, according to the State Bank of Viet Nam's HCM City branch.

A fluctuation in foreign currency was the main factor leading to a reduction in outstanding loans in foreign currency, according to the leader of SBV's HCM City branch, adding that the exchange rate had surged by 5 per cent this year.

The ratio of medium- and long-term loans in the period increased by 13.45 per cent over the end of last year, while the ratio of short-term loans fell.

Binh Duong attracts social housing

Binh Duong Province has attracted 82 social housing projects with total investment capital of VND19.03 trillion (US$847.6 million) since it started to carry out a social housing development programme five years ago.

Some 22 projects were put into operation, providing a total of 420,205 sq.m of floor and meeting accommodation demand for 36,860 people. Another 34 projects are expected to be completed by the end of this year, providing shelter for about 63,933 people.

In addition, 200 businesses operating in the province's industrial parks have also invested to build dormitories for their workers.

HCM City raises car registration fees

HCM City has increased registration fees for new cars of under 10 seats by 5.5 times from the current VND2million (US$89.06) to VND11 million (roughly US$489).

Registration for trailers of container trucks has increased to VND150,000 from VND100,000.

Registration fees for motorbikes have also gone up by 1.5 times. Motorbikes worth less than VND15 million will cost VND750,000 to register, a rise of VND250,000.

The registration fee for motorbikes worth VND15-40 million is VND1.5 million instead of VND1 million as before, and the fee for more expensive motorbikes is VND2-3 million.
