HCM City cracks down on smuggled goods

Nguyen Thi Hong, deputy chairwoman of the HCM City People's Committee, on Wednesday told relevant agencies and the City Steering Committee on combating smuggling, commercial fraud and counterfeit goods to be especially vigilant before and after the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival.

She was told that the steering committee conducted 56,052 inspections in the first 11 months of the year and discovered 51,228 violations.

Of the violations, 3,772 cases were related to smuggled and banned goods, up 242 per cent against the same period last year.

City pilots rubbish sorting programme

HCM City will begin a pilot programme to classify household waste in Districts 1, 3, 5, 12 and Binh Thanh.

The programme will provide two dustbins, one each for organic and inorganic waste, to households in pilot areas by December 15.

The city's Department of Natural Resources and Environment will use the model that it has already applied in District 1's Ben Nghe Ward.

VN looks to build 6,000km expressway

If ongoing projects are completed on schedule, Viet Nam will have 1,097km of expressways by 2020, according to a report submitted at a seminar in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

At present, 543km of a planned total of more than 6,000kmhave been built.

Da Lat agriculture prices increase

The price of agricultural produce, mostly vegetables and tubers, has increased significantly in Da Lat and neighbouring areas because damage caused by rains. The price of purple garlic has risen to VND90,000-100,000 (US$4.2 – 4.7) a kilo, up by VND20,000-30,000 over last month.
