Tien Giang opens eco-tourism sites

The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang this year opened three ecotourism sites, Tan Thanh, Dong Thap Muoi and Cai Be. The province targets 1.4 million tourists by the end of the year. Since the beginning of the year, it has seen 1 million tourists this year, an increase of more than 9 per cent compared to the same period last year. The revenue from tourism in the first nine months reached more than VND92.8 trillion (US$133 million), an increase of 9 per cent against the same period last year.

HCM City cuts electricity expenditure

HCM City saved more than 340 million kWh of electricity, equivalent to VND596 billion ($28 million) in the year's first nine months thanks to many power usage reduction programmes, according to HCM City Power Corporation. The savings helped reduce more than 212,400 tonnes of emitted carbon dioxide in order to protect environment.

The power usage reduction programmes include the one with the title of Using Electricity Safely and Economically in 46 schools and 12 cultural sites which students come for entertainment in summer in the city; the one of Safe and Economic Light Source for Social Security in the city's 816 families.

State to cover 95 per cent of treatment costs

Beginning in January, the national Health Insurance Department will pay 95 per cent of total treatment costs from the Health Insurance Fund, an increase from the current 80 per cent, for people living near the poverty line.

Tong Thi Song Huong, the head of the department, said there were 6 million people living near the poverty line, but only 2.2 million of them buy health insurance cards. For the near-poor, the state subsidizes 50-70 per cent of the cost for health insurance cards.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau revokes project licences

The People's Committee of the province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau has revoked the investment licences of 38 delayed projects this year. Site clearance and compensation rates to people who have to move to other locations had caused the delays. Many investors blamed higher land rents. The projects included six tourist sites in Vung Tau city.

Tien Giang builds water-supply plant

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh has begun construction on a water-supply plant with capacity of 100 cu.m per hour in Cang Long District's Nhi Long Phu Commune. The plant cost VND14.7 billion ($700,000).
