Companies fail to make insurance payments

Around 54,000 companies nationwide have not paid social insurance with total debt of VND11.5 trillion (US$550 million) to the end of August, affecting 714,000 labourers. The State budget also owes a total of VND2 trillion ($90 million) in social insurance.

Especially concerning is the amount of debt from bankrupt companies. By the end of the first quarter, there were 8,000 bankrupt companies with a total debt of VND623 billion ($30 million).

The Viet Nam Social Insurance has submitted solutions for social insurance debt to the Government. To ensure labourers' rights, one solution could require social insurance agencies officially confirm as soon as possible that employers have paid social insurance to their employees.

Railway projects become more costly

Finances for urban railway projects have increased by 60 -200 per cent compared with original plans due to price fluctuations, inflation, different designs for important works like tunnels, stations and fly-over bridges. Delayed ground clearance has also been a problem.

For example, funds for the second urban railway project from Nam Thang Long to Tran Hung Dao rose from VND19.5 trillion ($900 million) to VND51.7 trillion ($2.5 billion), even though it has not organised bidding.
