The fifth Writing Contest for Youth launched by the HCM City Writers' Association, in co-operation with Tre (Youth) Publishing House, received 328 works in different styles from amateur and professional writers nationwide.
Eighteen works by writers aged 20 to 40 were selected for the final round by a jury of veteran authors. These works have been published in local newspapers.
The organisers hope their contest will help young talents introduce their works to the public as well as bring writers and publishers together.

Early floods wreak havoc on paddy fields
Early floods have damaged hundreds of paddy fields of the summer-autumn rice crop in the Cuu Long (Mekong) River Delta provinces of Dong Thap and An Giang.
In Dong Thap, around 220 paddy hectares were damaged, leaving losses of VND2 billion (US$95,000). The river water levels have been higher than the average of previous year, and are threatening farmland.
Scientists at Can Tho University's Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources Management have suggested that local farmers complete planting of their crops before floods come and build dykes.
