The Ministry of Health has proposed that a special tobacco consumption tax be raised from 65 per cent to 105 per cent next year and to 145 per cent in 2018. With the raise, retail prices could climb by 21 per cent next year and 17 per cent in the 2018-2010 period.
According to Luong Ngoc Khue, director of the Health Ministry's Medical Examination and Treatment Department, the public each year spends about VND22 trillion (US$ 1.04 billion) for tobacco and another VND23 trillion is spent for treatment of tobacco-related diseases.

City to invest in new buses
The HCM City's People's Committee has approved a project to buy 1,680 new buses to replace old ones through 2017. Of the new buses, 300 will be powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) which causes less pollution, and is cheaper than diesel. Investors will be given preferential interest rates on bank loans.

More foreign tourists visit HCM City
HCM City saw 310,220 foreign tourists this month, up 8.3 per cent compared with the same period last year, according to the city's Culture, Sports and Tourism Department. Earnings from tourism reached VND7.5 trillion (US$357.7 million), an eight per cent rise.
The city estimated that it would receive more than 1.78 million foreign tourists in the first five months of this year, up 9.7 per cent year-on-year.
