The National Hospital of Peadiatrics has successfully treated siblings Nguyen Phi L, aged 39 months, and Nguyen Nguyet T, aged 18 months, for Bartter Syndrome, an inherited defect in the renal tubules that causes metabolic alkalosis (excess of alkali). After 15 months of treatment, the children's health has improved and they can walk. If untreated, the disorder can lead to kidney failure, heartbeat irregularities or death.

Teams inspect hand-foot-mouth disease
Five teams from the Ministry of Health will begin inspections in HCM City and the provinces of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Kon Tum, Dak Lak and Ca Mau to detect weaknesses in hand/foot/mouth disease prevention activities.
The Preventive Medicine Department reports that in the first four months of the year, the incidence rate of the disease nationwide fell by 20 per cent compared to the same period last year. However, the peak season for the disease will arrive soon.

Ninh Binh pharma projects get incentives
Under the National Strategy on Pharmacy through 2020, Ninh Binh Province in the Red River Delta will have five projects with preferential investment treatment.
They include a supplemental food-production plant at Phuc Son Industrial Park; the Ninh Binh Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company's quality improvement project; a production and development plant for medical materials at Tam Diep Industrial Park; and two projects for medicinal plants under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Investors wary of railway, waterway projects
Domestic and foreign investors are not pouring money into rail, water or air transport projects because of red tape, low profits and high initial capital, according to the Ministry of Transport. The project to develop a water "bus" system in HCM City, for instance, has yet to attract investors.

Highway 6 section set for upgrade
The Ministry of Transport will carry out a construction project on Hoa Lac-Hoa Binh Road and upgrade Highway No. 6's section between Xuan Mai and Hoa Binh under a Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) investment form.
The Investment Construction and Trading Co. Ltd No. 36, the Ha Noi Investment and Trade Joint Stock Company and the Truong Loc Joint Stock Company are the project's investors.
Total capital is nearly VND3 trillion (US$143 million). Upgrading Highway No. 6's section between Xuan Mai and Hoa Binh will begin this month and the construction of Hoa Lac-Hoa Binh Road will start next year.
