Forest fire threat closes national park

The U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang Province closed to tourists on Tuesday to prevent forest fires during the dry season. The national park will open to tourists again after its core areas are no longer under the threat of fire.

Lack of quality cruises hinders tourism

The lack of quality tourism products and port services are the reasons behind the low number of cruise tourists to Viet Nam, said Ho Anh Tuan, deputy minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, at a seminar held in Thua Thien - Hue Province on Wednesday.

Last year, the country received more than 193,000 cruise tourists, accounting for only 2.6 per cent of the country's total foreign tourists.

HCM City to host Southern Fruit Festival

The Southern Fruit Festival 2014 will open on June 1 in the Suoi Tien Cultural Tourism Park in HCM City's District 9.

Organised by the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the annual event will have 50 booths of orchard owners from 21 provinces and cities in the south.

The event will have other activities, including a "delicious and safe" fruit contest, art performances and folk games.

Report highlights child malnutrition scale

Viet Nam has 267,000 children who suffer from acute malnutrition, according to a report from UNICEF Viet Nam. The report, released at a seminar held in Da Nang on Wednesday, said that of the country's 7 million children aged under five, about 2.5 million are stunted from malnutrition and 780,000 are underweight from malnutrition.

Road to connect Sai Gon – Hiep Phuoc Port

HCM City authorities have approved a company to invest VND351 billion (US$16.7 million) to build D3 Road, which leads to the Sai Gon – Hiep Phuoc Port in Nha Be District, the port management board said on Wednesday.

Construction of the 2.3km road, which will have six lanes, will begin in June and is expected to be completed after 14 months of construction.

The port currently does not operate effectively because the lack of a road leading to it.
