Exports of agro-forestry-aquatic products rose 9.4 per cent over the same period last year, reaching US$7 billion in the first quarter. Coffee posted the strongest growth with an export volume of 601,000 tonnes worth $1.17 billion, followed by pepper with 49,000 tonnes valued at around $332 million.

New bridges open in Soc Trang
At least 150 new bridges on Wednesday opened to traffic in the rural areas of the Mekong (Cuu Long) Delta Province of Soc Trang.
Construction of the bridges began in October 2009, funded by the Schmitz Fund of the Federal Republic of Germany with VND16 billion ($760,000), and the province with VND8.5 billion ($403,750). The bridges will help prevent traffic accidents in the province.

City industrial zones need 17,000 workers
The HCM City Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority (Hepza) said that it needed 17,138 labourers in the first quarter, mostly unskilled workers, according to Ho Xuan Lam, chief of Hepza's Office. HCM City's industrial zones employed over 200,000 workers the first quarter, a drop of 1.5 per cent compared to the same period last year.

No. of enterprises resuming ops rises
More than 4,620 enterprises in the first quarter resumed operations after suspension, a rise of 48.9 per cent compared to the same period last year. In addition, more than 18,350 new companies were established with a total registered capital of VND97.9 trillion ($4.6 billion), up 16.9 per cent in number and 23.4 per cent in value.
