Farmers demand interest rate cuts on loans

Farmers and enterprises in The Central Highlands Province of Lam Dong have sought a reduction in interest rates on loans given for replanting coffee trees to 5-6 per cent.

The Viet Nam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has earmarked VND12 trillion (US$571 million) for the coffee replanting programme at an interest of 10 per cent. But the high rate has dissuaded farmers and firms from borrowing.

They also want the borrowing procedures simplified.

According to the Cultivation Department, 140,000 – 160,000 hectares of land with old and stunted coffee trees need to be replanted within the next five to 10 years.
