The Ministry of Transport has signed a build-operate-transfer contract with the B.O.T Thien Tan Limited Company to widen a section of National Highway No 1 in the central province of Quang Ngai.
The 30-kilometre section will be expanded to 23m with 12 lanes at a cost of more than VND2.1 trillion (US$100 million). The work is expected to take 24 months.

Gov't allots rice aid for six provinces
The government has decided to provide 5,494 tonnes of rice as aid to six provinces for Tet (Lunar New Year).
Son La will get 2,120 tonnes; Dak Lak, 886 tonnes; Kon Tum, 862 tonnes; Ha Nam, 547 tonnes; Ninh Binh, 546 tonnes; and Thanh Hoa, 506 tonnes.
The government will also provide 405 tonnes of rice to nearly 9,000 needy people who returned to Viet Nam from Cambodia in 2013.

Quang Nam to protect endangered mammal
The Quang Nam People's Committee has earmarked VND25 billion ($1.19 million) to protect the endangered saola (Pseudoryx nghetinhensis), a large species of wild ox.
The money is meant to manage the central province's saola reserve.

HCM City Red Cross brings Tet cheer to poor
The HCM City Red Cross Society raised more than VND23 billion (US$1.1 million) from local organisations to provide medical treatment and gifts to poor people during Tet.
It has given gifts costing VND400,000 to 80,000 people in rural and storm-hit areas in the city and neighbouring provinces.
It also provided free treatment and medicines to nearly 16,000 people and issued 119 health insurance cards.
