City launches campaign for the poor

The HCM City chapter of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front in co-ordination with the city's Department of Health on Wednesday kicked off a campaign to provide free healthcare services to poor people in the city.

Under the campaign, public and private hospitals and clinics are encouraged to offer health check-ups and treatment to at least 10 poor patients each per month.

The campaign also calls for support from health officials to purchase health insurance cards for poor patients.

Ban on single-engine hydrofoils

The HCM City Inland Waterway Port Authority on Wednesday halted the operation of six single-engine high-speed hydrofoils on the HCM City-Ba Ria-Vung Tau route due to a high risk of accidents.

The Ministry of Transport will dispatch a team to examine the operation of the single-engine hydrofoils to decide whether they can resume operation.

Eight two-engine high-speed hydrofoils on the HCM City-Ba Ria-Vung Tau route still meet the travelling demand of customers, according to the authority.

Nearly 1,500ha of forest destroyed

A total of 546 hectares of forest were illegally destroyed in the first eight months of the year, according to the Viet Nam Administration of Forestry.

Fire destroyed 868.8 hectares of forest in the same period. Nearly 6,000 cases of illegal forest destruction and 13,550 violations of transport and trading of forest products were uncovered during the period.

An average of 30,000 hectares of forest in the Central Highlands vanishes every year.

More than 34,000 violations of forest protection and development regulations are found every year, according to the administration.

Workers have little savings

Workers spend most of their incomes on living necessities without any savings, according to results of a survey conducted by the Institute for Workers and Trade Union at 68 enterprises.

The average salary of workers is VND3.67 million (US$175) per person per month, the survey found.

Mai Duc Chinh, deputy president of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour, said that minimum salaries could cover only 62-68 per cent of the living costs of workers.
