The HCM City Study Encouragement Association has raised more than VND165 billion (US$8 million) from different sources to support several thousand disadvantaged students in the last five years. Many poor teachers have also benefited from the association's fund.
The association has been able to attract funding from many local organisations and individuals.

Free milk offered for children in Dong Nai
Several thousand children aged 2-6 at 68 pre-schools in districts Xuan Loc, Cam My, Vinh Cuu, Dinh Quan and Tan Phu in Dong Nai Province will receive free milk from the School Milk for Students under 6 Years Old programme.
The province's Department of Education and Training in co-operation with its partners will launch the programme next week. More than VND18 billion (US$870,000) will be spent for the programme.

Tree planting programme begins
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment began a three-year Tree Planting for Viet Nam programme that aims to plant 1 million of trees across the country.
The programme's first phase begins in Hue, Ha Noi, HCM City, Quang Ninh Province, Da Nang and Quang Nam Province. More than 70,000 trees will be planted there. Local women and youth unions have been encouraged to participate in the event.

Coffee fields face water shortage
A lack of rain could seriously damage 40,000 hectares of coffee in the Central Highlands, causing the country's coffee output to drop by 25 per cent this season, according to the Viet Nam Coffee and Cocoa Association.
In May, the country exported 100,000 tonnes of coffee, a decrease of 46 per cent over the same period last year. Exports in the first five months of the year totalled 697,000 tonnes, at a value of US$1.49 billion.
