Student-teacher imbalance hits standards

Nguyen Quang Dien, former deputy director of the HCM City National University, says the establishment of new universities has been made too easy, resulting in loose controls over training quality. From 1987 to 2009, the number of students in the country increased 13 times, but there had only been a three-fold increase in the number of teachers, he said.

Out of 61,190 university and college teachers, just 10.16 per cent had got doctorates and 37.31 per cent had Master's degrees. A meagre 3.74 per cent were professors and assistant professors, he said.

The Government plans that by 2020, at least 35 per cent of the teachers have PhDs and 60 per cent have Master's degrees.

Construction materials industry in doldrums

The HCM City construction materials industry has been badly affected by the frozen real estate market and the general economic downturn. Relevant agencies estimate about 15-25 per cent of businesses in the industry could go bankrupt.

Experts say stockpiles have grown exponentially this year and with the oncoming rainy season, the immediate outlook for the construction materials industry is very bleak with low prices and low sales.
