The Viet Nam Food Association says that 279,266 tonnes of rice worth US$154 million were exported in January. The export volume is just half of what was shipped in January 2011, it said.
The main markets of Vietnamese rice are in Asia, accounting for 81.74 per cent, and America, which buys 9.75 per cent.

PM approves farming land use plan
A land use plan for the next decade approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung will reduce the area for agricultural production and increase it for forestry and aquaculture.
Under the plan, by 2020, 9.59 million ha will be used for agricultural production, a decrease of 580,000ha compared to 2010.
The plan will increase the land used for forestry and aquaculture. An addition of 879,000ha will be dedicated to forestation by 2020, making its total land area climb to 16.6 million ha. The total land area for aquaculture will be 790,000ha by 2020, an increase of 99,700ha compared to 2010.
The plan will ensure that more than 3.81 million ha will be used for growing rice from 2020 onwards.
