Viet Nam invests $2.1b abroad

The Foreign Investment Agency said last year Vietnamese investors pumped US$2.12 billion in 75 new projects and 33 existing ones in 26 countries and territories.

This has increased the total amount invested so far to $10.8 billion in 55 countries and territories.

High school student contest attracts 4,000

The Ministry of Education and Training said that the National Excellent High School Student contest, which began yesterday and ends today, has attracted 4,161 candidates taking tests in math, physics, chemistry, biology, computer, literature, history, geography, or foreign languages.

Students winning the contest can enter universities and colleges without sitting entrance exams after high school.

Nearly 300 old bridges need upgrading

The Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam has urged the Ministry of Transport to give priority to building and upgrading bridges this year.

The directorate has come up with a total cost of VND10.5 trillion (US$500 million) for the task as well as maintenance of roads.

Last year 195 old bridges were repaired, while there are 277 old bridges in the country requiring upgrades.

Hospitals ordered to remain open for Tet

The Health Examination and Treatment Department has ordered health facilities nationwide to ensure continued examination and treatment during Tet.

It has also instructed them to stock drugs and medical equipment and keep emergency vehicles and beds ready in case of outbreaks of diarrhoea, swine flu, bird flu, hand-foot-mouth disease, and dengue fever during the festival.

Free rice for poor in five provinces

The Government has ordered the distribution of 12,550 tonnes of rice from the national reserve to poor people in the five provinces of Cao Bang, Nghe An, Quang Ngai, Lao Cai and Ha Tinh for Tet.

Local authorities have been tasked with identifying the beneficiaries and distributing the grain.
