Delta reaps five tonnes of rice per hectare

Provinces in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region have harvested 210,000ha of the summer-autumn rice crop so far for an average yield of five tonnes per ha.

Local agricultural authorities have worked hard to introduce new cultivation methods to local farmers. More than 64 per cent of farmers in the region have been able to improve their yield by using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.

Work to begin soon on An Giang Airport

Construction of the An Giang Airport will begin early next month, according to Huynh The Nang, deputy chairman of the An Giang Province People's Committee.

The airport, built at a cost of VND 3.4 trillion (US$170 million), will have one runway 1,850-m long and 45-m wide. It will be built in Chau Thanh District's Can Dang Commune.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau revokes inactive projects

The southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau has revoked 11 domestic and foreign investment projects in the first half of this year owing to long delays and ineffective operations. Five of the FDI projects with a total registered capital of $42 million have lost their investment certificates.

The province has approved 12 FDI projects worth over $468 million this year.

Quang Ngai helps 33,000 poor students

Nearly 33,000 poor students living in the central province of Quang Ngai have benefited from a credit programme begun in 2008 by the provincial administration in collaboration with local banks.

They have received loans worth nearly VND464 billion ($23 million) on preferential terms.
