AES-VCM Energy Career Scholarship Presenting Ceremony


Hanoi, 19 November 2018 AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Co. Ltd. in cooperation with the Center for Education Development (CED) presented the AES-VCM Energy Career Scholarship to 20 outstanding students from Quang Ninh majoring in power and energy at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) and Electric Power University (EPU).

The AES-VCM Energy Career Scholarship is one of the Company’s initiatives to invest in education, training and preparing a high-tech workforce for Quang Ninh in particular and the Vietnamese energy sector in general. Besides the US$600 financial support, each student will benefit from participating in soft skills and English training, volunteer activities, community support and field visits to Mong Duong 2 BOT Thermal Power Plant invested and operated by AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Co. Ltd.

The Ceremony was held in the presence of Mr. David Stone, Managing Director of AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Company, Mr. Tran Van Top, Vice Principle of HUST, Ms. To Kim Lien, Director of CED, and scholarship recipients from both universities.

Addressing the Ceremony, Mr. David Stone said “In Vietnam, AES provides safe, reliable and sustainable energy to foster the country’s growth. We believe that besides power energy, Vietnam also needs human energy to accelerate the country’s progress. We, therefore, make investment in people and education a top focus in our social investment portfolio. I hope the scholarship and soft-skill training that we offer to these outstanding students today will add fuel for them to work harder at school and further improve personal development to become the owner of the Vietnam energy future that AES will be a part of.”

This is the second year AES-VCM has granted Energy Career Scholarships, which are highly appreciated by professors and students from the two universities.

Do Hong Son, a senior electrical major at the Power Institution, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, who received a scholarship shared in his letter to the Company “The scholarship I received last year from AES-VCM has changed my life in a very positive way as I was exposed to new skills and knowledge. This scholarship means a lot to me not only because of the financial support but also the soft-skills including English and PLC software writing that equips me for future career readiness. I have enjoyed several offsite training courses and activities where I make new friends with whom I commit to build a strong network of Quang Ninh technical engineers. We will contribute to the development of Quang Ninh and Vietnam. I believe the support from AES-VCM to us today will soon strengthen the foundations for Vietnam’s energy progress.”

Besides this scholarship, the AES-VCM Company have also implemented many CSR Programs aiming to improve education, healthcare and environmental protection for the last 7 years with a total value of over VND7 billion.

AES-VCM Mong Duong Power Co. Ltd is the owner of Mong Duong 2 BOT Power Plant located at Mong Duong ward, Cam Pha city, Quang Ninh province.

After breaking ground in December 2010, Mong Duong 2 BOT Power Plant has a capacity of 1,242 MW with 2 units and total investment capital of USD $2.1 billion. Since the date of synchronisation in April 2015, both units have contributed more than 12 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid. The power plant is expected to contribute more than 7.6 billion kWh of electricity to the national power grid annually.

The Center for Education and Development is an NGO with objectives to facilitate educational development and to come up with educational initiatives in Vietnam. Beside support for implementing scholarships for gifted and female students, the Center also conducts field, environmental and scientific projects; projects for parents; community center learning development projects; and projects on natural disaster risk management and legal timber.
