Vo Viet Cuong, age 22 an experienced burglar, made an unforgettable mistake while breaking into a villa in HCM City's Phu My Hung urban area.
Once a building maintenance worker in the prosperous urban area, Cuong was familiar with the buildings he targeted. Last week, after successfully breaking into a house through its ventilation system, he decided to make himself a bowl of instant noodles in the kitchen on the first floor.
After taking his time to finish his late-night snack, Cuong put a smart phone he found laying around in his pocket and … took a nap on the couch in the living room.
It was hard to imagine the villa owners' reactions when they found a stranger sleeping in their house the next morning. The police were swiftly contacted and Cuong was arrested for theft as well as breaking and entering.
Guests in Viet Nam are often told by their hosts: "Make yourself comfortable." But unfortunately, Cuong had no invite!
Thief displays rare honour
Pham Thi Ti, a rubbish collector in Cam Xuyen District in Ha Tinh Province, was crestfallen when she found her hard-earned savings had vanished when she came home from work.
The 54 year-old woman, who lived by herself, went to police to report her entire savings worth more than VND25 million (US$1,146) was stolen. She said it comprised VND200,000 in cash and seven golden rings worth varying amounts according to the amount of gold in them.
With so little to go on, police expected some sort of wild goose chase. Things became mysterious when two nights later; Ti found all seven rings neatly placed inside a bottle sitting at her front door.
The thief presumably took pity on the poor woman and decided to return the rings.
It was nothing short of a miracle for Ti. It would seem that even thieves can have a soft spot for the defenceless and vulnerable. One thing for sure, it must have taken a lot of courage to do the right thing.
Police hide their presence
A squad of policemen sent to arrest a wanted manwho had been in hiding were not quite sure what to do when they got him in their sights for the first time in years.
They were a bit perplexed to find him celebrating his wedding party when they arrived. The hall was full of people who had arrived to congratulate the newly wed couple.
The task force decided to not ruin his happy day and embarrass the two families in front of their guests. They quietly waited outside the wedding for hours.
Le Viet Nguyen, age 25, was wanted for theft in southern Binh Duong Province. He fled the province two years ago along with an alleged accomplice, Nguyen Dinh Dan, after their operations were exposed.
It was a shock for the bride and her family when the police finally entered the gathering and arrested her husband. Police patience paid off as they also found Dan at the wedding. He had turned up to enjoy his alleged partner-in-crime's big day.
Nguyen and Dan later confessed to their crimes. Both said they wanted to turn a new leaf, leave the past behind and settle down.
They will still have that option after they are released from prison, but, at present, perhaps Nguyenshould just be thankful for small mercies. — VNS
