HA NOI - The Viet Nam Olympic Committee has emphasised that the country is aiming to host the 18th Asian Games in 2019.
"The Vietnamese people strongly support and welcome the Asian Games in Viet Nam," said Hoang Vinh Giang, general secretary of the Viet Nam Olympic Committee. "I believe that if the Asian Games were held in Viet Nam, it would be a successful event."
The Government approved the plan to host the Asian Games and the necessary documents were sent to the Olympics Council of Asia (OCA) in March. The Asian Games is the largest sporting event in Asia.
Hong Kong, the United Arabian Emirates, India, the Philippines and Chinese Tai Pei are all in the running to host the event.
The OCA will announce the host country in 2011.
Viet Nam hopes to host several large sporting events during the next 10 years.
The country would like to host the Southeast Asian Games, the Asian Beach Games, and the Asian Martial Arts Games. – VNS
