Before embarking on my usual weekly rant about something or other, I urge all of you to hit YouTube and look at the late, great Robin Williams description of the origins of golf. It's the funniest clip any golfer can watch. A great way to celebrate the life of one of the world's true comic geniuses.
By all accounts, the PGA Championship turned out to be the best golf viewer value for money event this year. Last round, Rory McIlroy has to get on his horse to catch Phil Mickelson, Rickey Fowler and Henrik Stenson who were playing their butts off and in dramatic fashion, the kid comes through yet again. It truly seems that the only one who can stop Rory McIlroy is Rory McIlroy and that doesn't seem likely. He's hot and on a roll.
There are, of course, those who bemoan a "Tigerless Major", but those are the sour grapers who simply cannot get it through their heads that their idol, their hero, and in the case of the writers, their "bread and butter guy" isn't going to comeback anytime soon.
Yes, I said it. In fact, I have been saying it ever since the scandal and continue to say it. The fact of the matter is Tiger has no game right now. He has no swing. He has no confidence. He has no health. They guy is a mess, it's only getting worse and he did it to himself.
If Tiger Woods wants to be serious about a comeback, he has to take some time off to get his health problems settled, and then he has to dump Sean Foley as fast as he can. If he was smart, he'd call Butch Harmon, and if Harmon won't return his calls, settle for Hank Haney, but buy him a case of popsicles so he won't whine again.
Heck, I could fix Tiger's swing in less than a month if he would come to Viet Nam, and I'd do it for free just for the hell of it.
Should Tiger continue to train with Foley, he'll be lucky if he's still in the game five years from now. He could end up in a wheelchair with all the pressure that swing is putting on his lower spine.
Needless to say, Woods has some difficult choices to make and the sponsors want him to make the right ones so they can continue to reap the benefits of having Tiger Woods in the lead on the final day. Yes, money is the driving factor in all of this. Without Tiger, viewership is down, sponsors complain and the PGA Tour panics.
This means Tom Watson really has no choice but to put Tiger onto the Ryder Cup team, even if he's in a wheelchair and that have to prop him up to putt. As you might have read, Watson already stated that he'd be stupid to not have Tiger on the team.
READ: Watson has already caved to pressure.
Therefore, even without seeing the playing rosters for either team, I will simply say here and now that Europe will win yet again. Team USA is for sale and the deal has been done.
Unless…Tiger Woods does the right thing and bow out. Unfortunately, Tiger's ego will not allow that, so expect him to be on the team and losing drives left and right.
The entire thing makes me ill. Tiger didn't have to go through any of this, but he chose the wrong path every step of the way.
Yet, some pundits have already started moving away from Tiger and have proclaimed this the "Rory Era", but the lad is having none of it. He knows that he's the flavor of the month, but it can change in a heartbeat. He is showing he has a good head on his shoulders and is focusing on what is important. If he continues to do so, there is no telling how far he can go, but comparing him to Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus at this point in time is simply ridiculous.
Ricky Fowler also showed he has game and is heir apparent should Rory stumble. The kid is maturing nicely and his time will come for sure.
All this proves is that there is life after Tiger Woods and we should be ready for it. — VNS
