HANOI - Hanoian Vũ Đức Cường has made an unusual device that helps people with a fear of water learn how to swim.

It took him three years to make the piece of equipment, which is used to teach people how to swim on the ground.

Cường says he learned his mechanical skills from his father, who assembles bicycles. He created three kinds of devices, one for children under six, and the other two for children under 12 and for adults.

Cường, who says he wants the students to learn how to swim in the shortest time, decided to make the device after reading about drowning incidents that involved children.

Most schools do not have swimming pools or do not have the money to rent a pool to give lessons, he says.

In his classes, Cường uses five devices among 20 students. Each student practises swimming with the device for about seven minutes.--VNS
