Hà Nội, Bắc Giang claim first golds in chess

The first gold medals in chess at the National Sports Games went to the teams from Hà Nội and Bắc Giang yesterday.

HÀ NỘI — The first gold medals in chess at the National Sports Games went to the teams from Hà Nội and Bắc Giang yesterday.

Grandmaster Nguyễn Tuấn Minh of hosts Hà Nội topped the men’s individual standard chess class with nine points from nine matches. He was followed by HCM City’s GM Lê Quang Liêm who is world No 38 and national No 1 with 7.5 points. Nguyễn Văn Huy of Hà Nội was third with 6.5 points.

On the women’s side, Đoàn Thị Vân Anh made a bang, leaving the top 20 behind to take the title.

Anh, the tournament’s No 21 seed of Bắc Giang, won with 7.5 points. 

Players will continue rapid and blitz chess tomorrow.

There were two golds won in fencing yesterday. Hà Nội secured a gold in the women’s individual foil event through Nguyễn Thị Như Hoa, who defeated Trần Thị Len of Hải Dương 15-7.

The men’s title went to Nguyễn Minh Quang who beat Nguyễn Quốc Oai 15-13 in an all Bắc Ninh final.

Hanoian athletes dominated in taekwondo, winning three titles of the six available at Bắc Từ Liêm District Gymnasium.

The result strengthened their position in the medals tally with 105 golds, leaving HCM City and the Military playing catch-up. — VNS
