HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s U19 team lost to Uruguay 2-1 in the last match of the four-nation international friendly tournament held in Qatar on Saturday.
In the opening minutes, Việt Nam heaped pressure on their opponents, and came close to scoring an early goal.
As the South American team settled into the game, things became more even, but the Vietnamese opened the scoring through midfielder Hữu Thắng.
However, they were unable to maintain the lead, as the Uruguayans made advantage of their superior fitness and scored twice in the closing minutes to secure a slim victory.
Although losing to the eventual winners, Việt Nam gave Uruguay their toughest match of the tournament.
Previously, Việt Nam defeated Ivory Coast 3-1 and lost to Qatar 4-1.
“It does not matter we win or lose, as U19 Việt Nam is in the preparation for the final round of AFC U19 Championship. To be able to compete with such a high qualified team like Uruguay is a precious lesson to our national team,” said head coach Hoàng Anh Tuấn.
Việt Nam finished third in the tournament and will continue to prepare for AFC U19 Championship, slated for October in Indonesia. — VNS
