Minh and Trang enter Việt Nam Open’s quarter-finals

HÀ NỘI — Badminton players Nguyễn Tiến Minh and his wife Vũ Thị Trang both booked tickets to compete in the Yonex Sunrise - Việt Nam Open’s quarter-finals on Thursday.

The event was held at Nguyễn Du Gymnasium in HCM City.

In the women’s singles third round, Trang, world No 49, beat Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand, world No 83, 18-21, 22-20, 21-8 after over an hour.

Meanwhile, Trang’s husband Nguyễn Tiến Minh defeated Sitthikom Thammasin of Thailand 23-21, 21-11 in 40 minutes.

Minh is now world No 53, while his Thai rival is No 45.

Trang will next face No 2 seed Minatsu Matani of Japan, world No 26. Minh will meet Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia, world No 79 in the quarter-finals.

The couple are the final representatives of Việt Nam in the prestigious event’s quarter-finals.

The tournament, which has total prize money of US$75,000, has attracted more than 400 professional badminton players from 26 nations and territories. — VNS
