Minh through to second round of world badminton champs

Việt Nam’s top badminton player Nguyễn Tiến Minh won his first round match at the World Badminton Championships held at Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre in China yesterday.

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s top badminton player Nguyễn Tiến Minh won his first round match at the World Badminton Championships held at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre in China yesterday.

Minh beat Maxime Moreels of Belgium 21-10, 21-5 after 33 minutes in the men’s singles.

Minh is world No 55, while Moreels is world No 93. Minh will next face No 16 seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the second round.

On the women’s side, Nguyễn Thùy Linh defeated No 13 seed Canadian Michelle Hi 21-23, 21-12 and 23-21 in the second round.

Linh, the world No 77, beat the world No 68 Mariya Mitsova of Hungary 21-9, 21-14 in the first round.

In the women’s doubles, Vietnamese duo Đỗ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Hồng Nam lost to China’s Jiting He and Qiang Tan 21-10, 21-14.

Việt Nam sent nine players to the tournament which will conclude on August 5. — VNS
