VN athletes sent home early at the Asian champs

HÀ NỘI — No Vietnamese are left to compete at the Badminton Asia Championships underway in Wuhan, China, after Vũ Thị Trang suffered a defeat yesterday.

The national best female athlete was defeated 18-21, 12-21 by Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong in the women’s singles, second round.

Other Vietnamese athletes were disqualified from the first round on Wednesday.

Nguyễn Tiến Minh lost 11-21, 15-21 to Kento Momota of Japan in the men’s singles.

Nguyễn Thùy Linh was beaten 9-21, 13-21 by Chinese Xiaoxin Chen in the women’s singles.

Đỗ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Như Thảo lost 10-21, 15-21 to No.2 pair Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping.

The continental tournament, held at the Wuhan Sports Centre, will conclude on Sunday and give out a total reward of US$350,000. 

Athletes are competing in five categories of men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles. — VNS
