HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese tennis players will compete in the Davis Cup’s Asia/Oceania zone, Group 3 to be held in Hà Nội in April.

The team includes Lý Hoàng Nam, Trịnh Linh Giang, Phạm Minh Tuấn and Lê Quốc Khánh.

Players will begin training in HCM City in early March guided by coaches Trương Quốc Bảo and Tanveer Ashiq of Pakistan, before leaving for Hà Nội to familiarise themselves with the weather and local courts.

The southern province of Tây Ninh-born Nam will be the key player for the Vietnamese team in singles and doubles.

Nam is world No 471 and won the boy’s doubles title of the 2015 Wimbledon Championship with Indian partner Sumit Nagal, becoming the first Vietnamese tennis player to win a Grand Slam.

The Davis Cup in Hà Nội will feature nine teams, namely Syria, Arab Saudi, Qatar, Pacific Oceania, Malaysia, Kuwait, Jordan, Cambodia and the hosts Việt Nam.

The teams will be divided into two groups. The best two teams in each group will compete in the semi-finals to determine the best two nations to be promoted to Asia/Oceania Zone Group 2 next year.

Việt Nam dropped to Group 3 last year after losing 5-0 to Iran in the play-off in Isfahan City, Iran. — VNS
