HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Anh Khôi of HCM City took home the title of champion of the National Best Chess Masters Tournament’s standard chess event yesterday in Bắc Giang Province.

The world youth rapid chess winner secured five wins and four draws to top the category with seven points.

Among his matches, the No 2 seed defeated No 1 Nguyễn Đức Hòa of the Military in the seventh game, which was one of key points to help him win the title.

The other reasons might be the absence of national leading Grandmasters such as Lê Quang Liêm of HCM City and Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn from Kiên Giang, who skipped the tournament for personal reasons.

His teammate Phạm Chương came second while Nguyễn Hoàng Nam of the Military was at third.

It was Khôi’s second local title after his winning at the National Chess Team Championship in July.

On the women’s side, Võ Thị Kim Phụng of the hosts claimed the gold with seven points after nine matches. She was followed by Bạch Ngọc Thùy Dương and Nguyễn Thị Thanh An, both of HCM City. — VNS
