Nam into quarter-finals of F1 tennis event

HÀ NỘI — Lý Hoàng Nam entered the quarter-finals of the Mens’ Futures F1 tennis tournament, Becamex IDC Cup, in the southern province of Bình Dương on Wednesday.

The 20-year old Nam crushed 16-year-old Nguyễn Văn Phương 6-4, 6-0 in the second round match of the men’s singles which lasted 52 minutes.

Phương is the No 1 junior player of Việt Nam. He is world junior No 279, while Nam is the country’s top senior at 543 in the ATP rankings.

No 5 seed Nam will face Blake Ellis of Australia, world No 694, in the quarter-finals. Ellis, 18, beat Vietnamese Phạm Minh Tuấn 6-0, 6-4 in the second round.

In the second round of the men’s doubles yesterday, Phạm Minh Tuấn and Trịnh Linh Giang bested Yurii Dzhavakian of Ukraine and Grigoriy Lomakin of Kazakhstan 6-3, 2-6, 10-7.

The duo Miliaan Niesten of the Netherlands and Francesco Vilardo of Italy meanwhile defeated Sam Matheson of New Zealand and Artem Vũ of Việt Nam 6-1, 6-3.

Blake Ellis and Michael Look of Australia knocked out Indian pair S D Prajwal Dev and Nitin Kumar Sinha 6-4, 6-4. Vietnamese Phương and Congsup Congcar of Thailand lost to Japanese Sho Katayama and Arata Onozawa 2-6, 2-6.

Today, Nam of Việt Nam and Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei will face Niesten of the Netherlands Vilardo of Italy, while Vietnamese Tuấn and Giang meet Katayama and Onozawa of Japan in the quarter-finals. — VNS
