HCMC targets a dozen SEA Games gold medals

A huge contingent of 681 Vietnamese athletes will compete in 32 of 38 sporting events at the upcoming SEA Games 29.

HCM City — A huge contingent of 681 Vietnamese athletes will compete in 32 of 38 sporting events at the upcoming SEA Games 29.

HCM City alone will have 150 athletes contesting 22 events.

“The HCM City sports team has set a goal of winning 10 to 12 gold medals in athletics, swimming and gymnastics,” Mai Bá Hùng, deputy director of the municipal Culture and Sports Department, was quoted as saying on the Government website.

“Lê Tú Chinh is outstanding in 100m run, Lê Thanh Tùng is very good in gymnastics, Lâm Quang Nhật and Trần Duy Khôi are dominating swimming and we hope they will bring gold medals for Việt Nam in this SEA Games,” he said.

Other key sports for HCM City will be weightlifting, women’s football, fencing, muay Thai and futsal (indoor football).

For the sports of cricket, hockey and art-swimming, HCM City athletes will go to SEA Games to learn and gain experience, with all expenditures paid by private individuals and enterprises.

On Sunday, 5,000 people will join an event to encourage the city’s contingent.

SEA Games 29 will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 19-31. — VNS
