Young Vietnamese chess players won 20 gold medals at the Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championships which concluded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on June 25.

HÀ NỘI — Young Vietnamese chess players won 20 gold medals at the Eastern Asian Youth Chess Championships which concluded in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on Sunday.

Phạm Trần Gia Phúc, who won gold in the rapid chess event of the U8 category at the world championships in Belarus early this month, won gold medals in blitz, standard and rapid chess.

Six players won in standard events namely Nguyễn Nghĩa Gia Bình (boys’ U6), Bùi Huy Phước (boys’ U10), Trần Đặng Minh Quang (boys’ U12), Vũ Bùi Thị Thanh Vân (girls’ U12), Bạch Ngọc Thùy Dương (girls’ U14 ) and Trần Thị Diễm Quỳnh (girls’ U16).

Nguyễn Anh Khôi (boys’ U16) and Trần Minh Thắng (boys’ U18) finished third in the standard event but bagged gold medals in the rapid and blitz events.

The championship featured 584 players from 12 countries and territories, including China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia and the UK. Players between six and 18 years of age competed in three categories: blitz, standard and rapid chess. — VNS
