HÀ NỘI — Young Vietnamese karate martial artist Nguyễn Thị Ngoan bagged a bronze medal at the Karate1 Premier League, which closed in Dubai on April 3.

Ngoan defeated Turkish rival Yakan Tuba 4-2 in the women’s U61kg category to bring home the country’s only medal.

Earlier, Ngoan displayed good performance, triumphing over Moochani Fakhrisadat from Iran, Willian Natalie Karina from the United Kingdom and Kornfred Noemie from Switzerland to enter the semifinal round. Despite drawing with Suchankova from Slovakia in the semifinal round, she missed an opportunity to enter the final round because of the referee’s decision.

The four-day event attracted the participation of 892 players from 42 countries.

Ngoan is Việt Nam’s gold medal hope in the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be held in Malaysia in August. She won a gold medal in the U61kg division at the Asian junior event last year. She also won a gold medal at the SEA karatedo championships and ranked fourth at the world championships last year. — VNS
