Nam wins quarter-final berth at Japan F3 event

Lý Hoàng Nam of Việt Nam won two matches yesterday to book a slot in the quarter-finals of the Japan F3 Men’s Futures tennis tournament’s singles event in Kofu City.

HÀ NỘI — Lý Hoàng Nam of Việt Nam won two matches Wednesday to book a slot in the quarter-finals at the Japan F3 Men’s Futures tennis tournament’s singles event in Kofu City.

Nam beat Sho Katayama 6-1, 6-2 in the first match and went on to win 6-2, 6-3 over Hiroyasu Ehara in the second one. Both of his rivals were from the host country.

In the last-eight, Nam will play No 6 seed Gao Xin of China. Gao also pocketed two wins over Yusuke Watanuki of Japan and Wu Tung-lin from Chinese Taipei.

In the doubles category, Nam and Yusuke Takahashi were eliminated in the first match, losing 2-6, 6-3, 7-10 to No 4 duo Yuichi Ito and Jumpei Yamasaki of Japan.

In other news, Nguyễn Văn Phương of Việt Nam advanced to the third round of the Kuala Lumpur ITF International Junior Championship’s boys singles U18 G5 event.

Phương beat Muhammad Syabil Md Shaharudin of the hosts 6-1, 6-3 on Wednesday.

The No 16 seed will next play No 4 Theertha Shashank Macherla from India.

Việt Nam have four representatives at this tournament but three were disqualified in earlier rounds. — VNS
