Việt Nam’s female team rose seven steps from 16th to ninth place out of 140 teams at the Chess Olympiad yesterday in Baku, Azerbaizan.

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s female team rose seven steps from 16th to ninth place out of 140 teams at the Chess Olympiad yesterday in Baku, Azerbaizan.

The team defeated Estonia 3-1 to secure 14 points after 10 matches.

Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên beat Narva Mai. Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm tied with Tsiganova Monika. Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng beat Olde Margareth and Nguyễn Thị Thanh An drew with Narva Triin.

Việt Nam will face the Netherlands next.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese male team dropped from 13th position to 28th out of 150 teams after losing to Slovenia 1-3.

Grandmaster (GM) Lê Quang Liêm tied with GM Alexander G. Beliavsky. GM Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn also drew with Luka Lenic. While Nguyễn Huỳnh Minh Huy and Nguyễn Anh Khội were defeated by Jure Borisek and Matej Sebenik, respectively.

Việt Nam will meet China, who tied 2-2 with Belarus to rank 20th , in the next round. — VNS
