HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s men’s team defeated Colombia 3.5-0.5 in the second match at the ongoing 42nd World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Former world blitz chess champion Lê Quang Liêm, who has an Elo rating of 2723, tied with Arenas David (Elo 2490). Meanwhile, Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn (Elo 2633) beat Rios Cristhian Camilo (Elo 2489) and Huỳnh Minh Huy (Elo 2435) won over Escobar Forero Alder (Elo 2510). Of note, 14-year-old Nguyễn Anh Khôi (Elo 2448) defeated Barrientos Sergio, 30, (Elo 2465).

Việt Nam had seven points after two matches, to temporarily rank 21 out of 150 teams.

Meanwhile, Việt Nam’s women’s team also defeated Bangladesh 3-1 to rank 14th out of 140 teams.

Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm (Elo 2325) lost to Sultana Sharmin Shirin (Elo 2002) and Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên (Elo 2338) beat Shamima Akter Liza (Elo 2129). Also, Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng (Elo 2316) defeated Khan Nazrana (Elo 1965) and Nguyễn Thị Thanh An (Elo 2249) crushed Hamid Rani (Elo 1993).
