HÀ N\ỘI — Olympic Rio 2016 gold medalist Hoàng Xuân Vinh is ranked first in the world men’s 10m air pistol event, according to the latest International Sport Shooting Federation ranking.

The Vietnamese marksman reached his highest position following his success at the Olympics Games, where he won a gold medal and set new world record.

Previously, he was ranked sixth, with Brazilian Wu Felipe Almeida at the top of the rankings. The Brazilian finished second behind Vinh at the Rio event and is currently also second in the world ranking.

Another Vietnamese, Trần Quốc Cường dropped two spots to No. 28 following his early disqualification at the Olympics.

In the men’s 50m pistol pool, Vinh jumped 18 places up to No. 2 thanks to his Olympic silver. The top spot went to South Korean Jin Jongoh who triumphed in Rio. Jin was in third place in the 10m air pistol discipline. Cường also participated in this category, but his poor result meant he did not qualify for the finals. He moved down six spots to No. 30. — VNS
