HÀ NỘI —  The Việt Nam team ended their most successful Olympics ever with one gold and one silver medal, both won by shooter Hoàng Xuân Vinh.

Previously the best result of the Viet Nam team had been two silver medals, one in taekwondo by Trần Hiếu Ngân in Sydney 2000 and one in weightlifting by Hoàng Anh Tuấn in Beijing 2008.

Việt Nam ranked 48th among 206 countries and territories that took part in the Rio Olympics.

In the Southeast Asian region, Thailand came first with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Indonesia finished second, grabbing one gold and two silver medals. Việt Nam was placed third.

In Rio, players from 78 countries and territories won medals. They set 65 new Olympic records, including one in the 10m air pistol by Viet Nam’s Vinh, and broke 19 world records.

The next Summer Olympics will be organised in Tokyo, with Japan promising to host the best Games yet in 2020. — VNS
