HÀ NỘI — The national U16 football team will compete at the 2016 U16 Southeast Asian Championships in Cambodia next month, according to the Việt Nam Football Federation (VFF).
The VFF announced that the players had gathered on June 19 for training under coach Đinh Thế Nam until July 6.
Việt Nam will compete against Myanmar, Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore in Group A. Group B comprises Thailand, Laos, Timor-Leste, Brunei and host nation Cambodia.
The teams will compete in a round robin format in the group stage, with the two best teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. Việt Nam will face Malaysia on July 10, Australia on July 12, Myanmar on July 14, the Philippines on July 16 and Singapore on July 18. The championship is considered an important competition for the national team as part of preparations for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U16 Football Championship. — VNS
