HÀ NỘI — The 17th Asian Junior Athletics Championships will be held at Thống Nhất Stadium in HCM City on Friday.

700 young athletes and coaches from 40 countries and territories worldwide will compete in 22 categories at the event. Participating countries include Qatar, Japan, China, Iraq, South Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Thailand.

Vice Chairman of the Việt Nam Athletics Federation Nguyễn Trung Hinh said the host country would have 27 athletes competing for prizes at the tournament.

The biennial event, which is also an opportunity for young Vietnamese track and field athletes to prepare for the Junior Olympics, will run until June 6.

Việt Nam ranked 10th out of the 23 nations which competed in the 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championships in 2014 in Chinese Taipei. China took the lead that year, with 12 gold, 10 silver and two bronze medals. — VNS
