HCM City chess player wins rapid event at chess tourney

HUẾ — Từ Hoàng Thông of HCM City won a gold medal in the men’s rapid category at the National Chess Tournament in Huế City yesterday. 

Thông, who has an Elo rating of 2394, defeated Việt Nam’s No 2 player Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn of Cần Thơ, who has an Elo rating of 2634, in the first match.

Thông then beat four other players, including young talents Lê Tuấn Minh of Bình Dương and Trần Minh Thắng of Hà Nội.

With five wins and four draws, Thông gained seven points to take the gold medal in the division. Lư Chấn Hưng of Kiên Giang and Trần Tuấn Minh of Hà Nội took silver and bronze medals.

Thông, 44, began playing chess at the age of 10. He has won four titles at national chess events.

On the women’s side, Việt Nam’s No 1 player Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên of Cần Thơ bagged a gold medal with eight points after nine matches. — VNS
