HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam pocketed more golds at the ongoing ASEAN ParaGames 2015 in Singapore yesterday.

Nguyen Thanh Xuan brought home a gold medal in the men's 65kg weightlifting event. He also broke the event's record with his result of 171kg. Track-and-field athletes and swimmers also bagged eight gold medals.

On Saturday, swimming and powerlifting brought five more gold medals for Viet Nam.

Weightlifters Le Van Cong and Nguyen Binh An each grabbed a gold in the men's 49kg and 54kg, respectively.

The pair said their performance is to prepare for the upcoming Paralympic Games Rio 2016 in Brazil. The remaining three golds went to swimmers Vo Huynh Anh Khoa, Pham Anh Tu and Tran Quoc Phi.

Vu The Phiet, who lead the delegation to the event, said the main goal is not the number of medals seized but disabled athletes' efforts to overcome their disabilities.

At present, Viet Nam rank fourth overall with 28 gold, 30 silver and 28 bronze medals at the tourney.

Indonesia lead with 47 golds,44 silvers and 26 bronzes, followed by Thailand and Malaysia. — VNS
