Hien becomes U8 world chess champion

HA NOI (VNS) — Nguyen Le Cam Hien has become another Vietnamese world chess champion.

Hien gained nine points after 11 matches to win in the girls' U8 category at the World Youth and Cadets Chess Championships that ended in Porto Carras, Halkidiki, Greece, early today (November 6).

Gaal Zsoka of Hungary and Ivanova Dilyana of Bulgaria were the runners-up.

Hien is the first child of famous chess players Grandmaster Nguyen Anh Dung and FIDE master Le Thi Phuong Lien.

In the boys' U18 division, Tran Tuan Minh ranked ninth, while Nguyen Quoc Hy was in 12th position in the boys' U18 category.

Earlier, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Nguyen Anh Khoi became two world champions in the boys' U10 category.

The championships drew 1,596 players from 92 countries and territories, including 18 Vietnamese players.

India dominated the event, winning 11 medals, including five gold medals. Russia and the United States took four medals each, but none of them was gold. Iran, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan and Germany, besides Greece, Uzbekistan and Viet Nam won a gold medal each. — VNS
