Vien wins gold at Military World Games

HA NOI (VNS) — Viet Nam's top female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien won a gold medal and broke the CISM Military World Games' record in the women's 200 medley final in South Korea yesterday.

The southern province of Can Tho-born Vien defeated seven other swimmers and clocked a time of 2:13.87, breaking the previous record of 2:13.92 .

Russian Andreeva Viktoriia won silver with a time of 2:13.96 while the bronze medal went to Zhu Yingying of China with a time of 2:16.73

Vien previously won gold at the Youth Olympics in 2014 in the 200m medley with a time of 2:12.66. At the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singpore in June, she also took gold and set a new record with a time of 2:13.53.

In the qualifying round, Vien took the lead in the pool 2 with a time of 2:21.23.

Earlier, Vien received the bronze medal in the women's 800m medley with a time of 8:39.41.

It is the first time Vien has taken part in the Military Games which has attracted approximately 8,700 soldiers from 110 countries. It is organised every four years, one year before Olympic Games.

Viet Nam are participating in six events including shooting, boxing and volleyball in the tournament.

At the eighth Asian Age Group Championships in Bangkok, Thailand on October 4, Vien won seven golds.

Vien was a phenomenon at the Singapore Games after winning eight gold, one silver, and one bronze medal and breaking eight SEA Games records. — VNS
