HA NOI  (VNS) — Viet Nam won one more silver and three bronze medals to affirm the third place in medal tally at the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore yesterday.

The team have won 73 gold, 52 silver, and 60 bronze medals.

Thailand took the lead with 93 golds, 83 silvers, and 68 bronzes.

Viet Nam's women's volleyball team brought home a silver medal, after losing 18-25, 18-25, 15-25 to Thailand in the final.

It was the eighth SEA Games final loss in a row for the Vietnamese.

According to coach Thai Thanh Tung, it was a really difficult challenge for Viet Nam who wanted to change their medal's colour.

"The Thai rivals were very strong. They were better than us in terms of experience, skills and tactics," Tung said.

"There were many young talents in our team in this Games alongside only two veterans Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa and Do Thi Minh. Most of them were taking part in the Games for the first time, so they lacked competition experience," Tung noted.

"The Viet Nam Volleyball Federation has detailed plans to develop young talents for upcoming events," Tung added.

The men's team will meet Thailand in the finals today.

They crushed Myanmar 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 in the semi-final yesterday to enter the final, which comes after eight years of waiting.

In women's singles badminton, Vu Thi Trang lost 11-21, 17-21 to Thailand's Busanan Ongbumrungpan in 34 minutes to get a bronze medal.

Trang wasn't expected to beat Thai rival in this match as 19-year-old Ongbumrungpan ranks 18th in the world ranking, while 23-year-old Trang is No 47.

Vietnamese top male badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh failed in the qualifying round on Sunday.

Yesterday morning, Vietnamese sepak takraw players bagged one bronze, after losing to Thailand 8-21, 18-21 in the semi-final of the women's doubles event.

After 12 days of competitions, the 28th SEA Games will close today. The ceremony will be broadcast live on VTV6 at 7pm Ha Noi time.

During the ceremony, the Parade of Stamps will feature live-sized floats of Singapore stamps from the past till the present. — VNS
