HA NOI (VNS) — Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son has signed a four-year contract with the Can Tho team.

Son, who played for Kien Giang earlier, will receive a monthly salary of VND17 million (US$800).

In his new team, Son will have a chance to train and compete with his girlfriend Pham Le Thao Nguyen. Both had won gold medals at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar two years ago.

One of the leading chess players of Viet Nam, Son learned to play chess at the age of three. He won a gold medal at the World U10 Championships in 2000, and is Viet Nam's youngest grandmaster ever. — VNS
