LONG AN (VNS) — A goal each by forward Le Cong Vinh and midfielder Nguyen Hong Viet helped Song Lam Nghe An defeat hosts Dong Tam Long An 2-1 in a 15th round V-League match yesterday afternoon.
Third from last with seven points after 12 matches, Long An needed a win to escape from the bottom group. Coach Nguyen Huu Thang was also under pressure as Nghe An had gone without a win for four consecutive matches to languish in ninth place with 13 points.
As both sides fought with determination from the very beginning, the higher quality of Nghe An players was apparent.
The visitors created the first scoring chance of the match in the 27th minute with defender Tran Dinh Hoang kicking the ball from the penalty area and hitting the horizontal crossbar, beating Long An custodian Nguyen Tien Phong.
Nghe An fans were not kept waiting for long. Six minutes later, Vinh converted a penalty, inspiring his team to play more exciting football. Before the end of the first half, midfielder Nguyen Hong Viet doubled the score.
In the second half, Nghe An slowed things down, enabling Long An to put pressure on goalkeeper Tran Nguyen Manh. The hosts' shortened the lead in the 58th minute with an opportunist strike by forward Ganiyu Oseni, a new comer.
Repeated attacks by both teams in the following minutes failed to bear fruit until the end of the match.
Nghe An moved up one spot with 16 points while Long An maintained their place with seven points.
In other 15th round matches of Eximbank V-League 2014, SHB Da Nang disappointed their fans with a goalless draw against QNK Quang Nam, while Ha Noi T&T beat Hung Vuong An Giang 4-1 at home.
Da Nang is now in fourth position with 19 points, Ha Noi T&T stand third with 23 points and An Giang is second from the bottom with four points. — VNS
