HA NOI (VNS)—Viet Nam on Saturday won one silver and one bronze at the World Xiangqi (Chinese chess) Championships in China, snagging two tickets to compete at the upcoming World Mind Games.

Nguyen Hoang Yen claimed second place in the women's individual category with 14 points after seven wins and one loss; behind Chinese Tang Dan who won the title by two points. Third place was claimed by Jia Dan of the US.

Teammate Uong Duong Bac ranked fourth in the men's individual pool.

In the men's team event, Yen, Bac and Ton That Nhat Tan came in third behind mainland China and Macao.

Tournament regulations stipulate that the top four women's and top eight men's contingents will qualify for the Mind Games event to be held in China.

Yen and Bac will represent Viet Nam at the event between December 12-18.

Earlier, world No 34 Grandmaster Le Quang Liem was invited to compete at the Games after competing at the World Blitz Chess Championships in June. — VNS
