Viet Nam will put all its best junior athletes to the test at the eighth Southeast Asia Youth Athletics Championship beginning today at Thong Nhat Stadium in HCM City.
Nguyen Duc Nguyen, head coach of Viet Nam's team of 100 athletes, said that some of the top athletes would be selected for the Asian Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, next year.
Viet Nam have the most athletes, 95, to compete at the tournament, while Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand have also sent a big contingent to the annual two-day competition.
Nguyen Trung Hinh, secretary of the HCM City Athletics Federation, confirmed that the facilities and the quality of refereeing for the tournament had met all requirements of the Asian Athletics Federation.
This is the second time the city has been the host of the tournament. The first event was held in 2009.-VNS
