Nguyen Tien Minh defeated Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin 17-21, 21-9, 21-8 in the first round of the Yonex Australian Badminton Open yesterday in Sydney.
Seeded second, the only Vietnamese participant in the tournament took 58 minutes to come from behind, sealing his victory against the unseeded rival from Malaysia. The last time the players were matched – in the Chinese Taipei Open last year –Minh won 21-17, 21-17.
Minh, world No 9, will next meet Mitchell Wheller, who both advanced to the main round from the qualifiers.
The Australian Open will conclude on April 7. In the previous year, Minh lost 11-21, 12-21 to Chinese player Chen Jin in the final match. — VNS
